MALL OF CYPRUS EXTENSION, Nicosia (Cyprus)
Two adjacent buildings in composite steel-concrete structure are located over an heavy duty platform covering an existing underground parking; seismic isolation devices of the in elevation construction are located on top of the parking columns.
One of buildings is composed of the existing underground and ground floors and of the added mezzanine and first floor interconnected by car ramps allowing for parking use of all the levels.
The second building features a roof with elevated platforms for the mechanical equipment, a first and a ground floor for retail use, and the underground for parking.
Wide gap seismic joints are located in between the new buildings and along the facing existing Mall.
The column positions match the underground longitudinal centerlines of 16.00 m while in the transverse direction columns between the existing ones are added; reinforced concrete jackets increase the loadbearing capacity of all the columns while the relevant foundations were enlarged in order to resist the new actions.
The depth of the composite steel-concrete structures were kept to a minimum in order to obtain the required overhead distances from ground floor, mezzanine and first floor; the dynamic response to walking and running was kept within the comfort acceptance recommendations.
