COMPETITION FOR A BRIDGE OVER PO RIVER IN TORINO - ITALY

Project's Categories COMPETITIONS, ROADS AND BRIDGES
Services provided preliminary design in partnership with MC-2 Estudio de Ingeniería, Madrid
Client Comune di Torino
Competition year 2002

The bow string structure spans 140 m without intermediate supports and is composed of two steel arches with a round section and of a Y shaped precast concrete deck bearing on steel box girders; strand cables inside steel pipes constitute the hangers.
The shape of the deck allows for the direct connection to the existing walkways on the opposite shores; the pedestrian paths outside the hangers are paved with the same fine gravel used in the surrounding gardens, while for the biker ones normal asphalt is used.
For the erection was considered the construction of the whole bridge, in the direction parallel to the river on the shore where the deck branches converge and the following horizontal 90° rotation using floating barges.
In spite of recent flooding of Torino called for no obstructions in the flow, another solution with two piles in the river bed was preferred and won the competition.
