BRIDGE OVER BREMBO RIVER, Lenna (Bergamo)
WINNING PROJECT - DESIGN COMPETITION
A bow-string structure with a lattice composite deck spans the river where nature and an ancient bridge define a very intense setting.
The bridge is part of a road project which allows the bypass of the town center of Lenna, spanning 70 m over the BremboRiver. Lightness and balance were sought in the design, due to the intense mountain surroundings and to the presence of an existing ancient multiple arch stone railways viaduct.
The arch typology was chosen, and the structure is basically a bow-string solution, with a central steel arch suspending a composite spatial steel and concrete deck. To push the slenderness and lightness of the structure to its limit, the arch is rigidly connected with the abutments, so that the structure features a hybrid behavior between the pure bow-string mechanism and an hypersatic spatial structure.
The solution was awarded the first prize in the design competition held by the local Community. Construction was completed in 2005.
